TYPES OF BRAKES
Semi-trucks use an integrated air brake system divided into three primary functional types—service, parking, and emergency brakes—operating through specific foundation mechanisms at each wheel.
Main Functional Brake Types
Service Brakes: Used during normal driving to slow or stop the truck by sending compressed air to the brake chambers when you press the pedal.
Parking Brakes: Utilizes heavy-duty internal springs kept disengaged by air pressure; releasing the air activates the spring force to hold the vehicle safely parked.
Emergency Brakes: Shares the mechanical spring-brake components; if air pressure drops below a safe threshold, the system automatically engages to stop the truck safely.
Foundation Brake Mechanisms (At the Wheels)
S-Cam Drum Brakes: The most traditional design, using an S-shaped camshaft rotated by compressed air to push brake shoes outward against the inside of a heavy metal drum.
Air Disc Brakes: Uses a caliper and rotor system similar to modern cars, where air pressure squeezes brake pads against a spinning disc for superior heat dissipation and stopping power.
Wedge Brakes: A less common drum-brake variation that uses a mechanical wedge pushed between the brake shoes by a piston instead of a cam.
Supplemental and Auxiliary Brakes
Engine Brakes (Jake Brakes): Alters engine valve operation to use engine compression to slow the truck down, preventing overheating on steep downward mountain grades.
Retarders: Driveline-based systems (transmission or electromagnetic) that provide extra resistance to control speeds without wearing down the primary wheel brakes.

DEFINITION
Air brakes are a heavy-duty braking system that use compressed air instead of hydraulic fluid to safely slow down and stop large vehicles like semi-trucks, buses, and trains.
How Air Brakes Work
Air brakes rely on pressurized air (usually over 100 PSI) generated by an engine-driven compressor.
Charging the System: The compressor pumps compressed air into storage tanks (reservoirs) until it is needed.
Applying Service Brakes: When you press the brake pedal, valves open to send compressed air into the brake chambers at each wheel.
Creating Mechanical Force: The air pressure pushes against a diaphragm and pushrod, turning a cam that forces the brake shoes against the drum (or clamps pads against a rotor), stopping the wheel.
Releasing Brakes: When you release the pedal, the air exhausts out of the system, and a return spring pulls the brake pads away.
Main Components
An air brake system consists of several essential working parts:

Why Big Vehicles Use Them

ENGINE-DRIVEN NET ZERO
The primary energy source for an air brake system is an engine-driven air compressor that continuously pumps and stores compressed air under high pressure.
How the Energy Works
An air brake system uses compressed air to do the heavy work of stopping a large vehicle. The driver does not use physical leg power to push the brake pads against the wheels. Instead, the driver's foot controls valves that release stored air power.

The effective surface area of the flexible diaphragm inside a commercial vehicle's air brake chamber typically ranges from 9 to 30 square inches, where compressed air energy is converted into mechanical force.
How Air Brake Area Works
Energy Conversion: Compressed air acts as stored potential energy pushing against a flexible rubber diaphragm inside the brake chamber.
Standard Sizes: Brake chambers are classified by their nominal diaphragm area in square inches, with common sizes being Type 16, 20, 24, and 30.
Calculating Force: The mechanical force produced equals the air pressure multiplied by the diaphragm area (Force = Pressure × Area).
Example: If an air system operates at 120 pounds per square inch (PSI) and pushes against a 30-square-inch diaphragm, it generates 3,600 pounds of direct push-rod force (120 × 30).
