Quick Calculation Formulas

An automatic or kinetic watch mechanism does not generate nearly enough energy to charge a mobile phone.

An average mobile phone requires about 15 to 20 watt-hours (Wh) of electrical energy for a full charge, translating to roughly 1 to 5 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of direct power per year under normal daily use.

Battery and Charging Details

Battery Capacity: A typical modern smartphone has a battery capacity of about 4,000 milliamp-hours (mAh) at 3.7 to 3.8 volts, equal to roughly 15 Wh.

Energy Draw per Charge: Because charging loses some energy as heat, pulling a phone from 0% to 100% takes about 20 Wh (0.02 kWh) from the wall.

Annual Cost to Charge: Charging your phone once a day uses about 7.3 kWh per year in direct grid power, costing less than a dollar annually in electricity.

Active Power Consumption

Idle Power: Uses about 0.1 watts when sitting idle with the screen off.

Active Use: Uses about 1 to 3 watts during typical tasks like web browsing, music streaming, or light app usage.

Heavy Use: Demanding tasks like video recording, 3D gaming, or video calling can draw 5 watts or more.
